Getting my computer to run faster?

I've got an older PC. It's really getting slow. I've tried the normal thing of clearing the cookies and files, but it still says it's got like 4% memory left. Anything I can do at home to make it have more memory? I am not very computer literate, so please explain it in laymans terms if at all possible.
