I've learned to pick and choose my battles. In fact, many times I just look for a simple example to point out the nonsensical nature of what my friends and family are up to in the name of faith. Sometimes, a gentle contrarian poke is more effective than an elaborate discussion. I've also learned to be happy with small victories -- they have believed in this stuff for a long time, they can't just wash it off. It is easier if you have a diverse set of friends so you can compare and contrast to know the contradictions and trivialities in each faith.
